Your New Year’s Resolution -- Just do it!

Happy New Year to all our members.

Happy New Year to all our members. Here’s to a 2010 of greater financial certainty, job satisfaction and opportunities for developing skills and careers. Here’s to a 2010 when we all stand up for ourselves collectively and individually. Where members are being bullied, we will challenge it. Where members fear the consequences of yet another restructuring we will negotiate it. Where members are adjusting to a major relocation we will identify the problems and get management to address them. Where members are working in an environment that is changing rapidly in unknown directions, we will work together to develop a vision of the future we want to see, and campaign for it to become a reality
Are we still in recession, or is it over? Is the deskilling of editorial work on books and journals inevitable or does quality still count? Has the digital age put paid to diverse and quality news journalism or can we find new models to preserve the values we care about? Things could go either way. But if every member makes a New Year’s Resolution to say: “I will use my union to improve job security, job satisfaction, and career prospects for me and my colleagues, I won’t sit back and just let things happen,” then 2010 could be a very good year for us and our profession. Just do it.
