It’s back to the negotiating table at Macmillan

Macmillan UK have given assurances to the joint NUJ/Unite chapel at Macmillan Education, Oxford, that future pay settlements will be decided by negotiation, as per the house agreement.

Macmillan UK have given assurances to the joint NUJ/Unite chapel at Macmillan Education, Oxford, that future pay settlements will be decided by negotiation, as per the house agreement. They have also signalled that they are prepared to make concessions over maternity leave and take steps towards a more transparent salary structure.
The moves came after the joint chapel declared a dispute over the imposition of a 1% pay rise, which took effect in April. The 1% was imposed across Macmillan’s global operations, but the joint chapel was refused a say even in the distribution of a separate pot of local money used to fund ‘discretionary’ or ‘merit’ pay awards. Twenty-five chapel members took out individual grievances over the breach of their right to have their pay negotiated by their unions.
As a ‘gesture’ to the chapel in recognition of the anger over the imposed deal, the company offered a half-day holiday and a picnic for all staff(!) More importantly, perhaps, it signalled that it will be addressing long-standing demands on improvements to maternity leave (effectively extending the allowable period of leave from 6 months to 39 weeks). It has also promised to provide the documentation on salary levels that the chapel needs to be able to identify unfair discrepancies, which members hope will be the first step towards achieving their longstanding goal of a transparent pay structure.
