NUJ/Unite challenge failure to negotiate at MacmillanA joint NUJ/Unite chapel meeting at Macmillan Education in Cowley will decide what action to take over the company’s failure to negotiate over their pay claim. A joint NUJ/Unite chapel meeting at Macmillan Education in Cowley will decide what action to take over the company’s failure to negotiate over their pay claim.
Macmillan imposed a 1% rise across the board in April, three months later than usual, which they said was non-negotiable. The unions had asked for the right to negotiate over payments made from a separate pot of money, which is set aside for distribution within departments, but even this has been denied them.
The joint chapel meeting will decide whether to put the failure to negotiate into the collective disputes procedure, as recommended by a meeting of all reps from throughout the Macmillan group on May 21st. It will also consider using the individual grievance procedure as a way that individual staff members can insist on their right to a negotiated pay settlement under the recognition agreement.
The chapel will also be considering ways to make progress on their most long-standing demand for greater consistency and transparency on pay levels. One possibility up for discussion is to demand that the company conduct a pay audit.
“Members are very frustrated at the lack of movement,” said NUJ FoC Alan Dury, “but we are optimistic that concerted pressure from both unions across all sites will bear fruit.” AW 2009-06-03
