NUJ members across ITV regional news are to be balloted on strike action after the company refused to enter formal conciliation over massive cuts to local and regional news staff.
At the end of September, ITV announced its intentions to cut 429 editorial staff from its Regional News operation. The cuts would deprive Oxfordshire of the strong local news service Thames Valley Tonight has provided over the past years. The 46-strong staff at the Abingdon station would be reduced to a rump of 3, tasked with feeding in stories to “local” news bulletins covering a huge area stretching as far as Dover.
The postal ballot will open next Monday (10 November) and close two weeks later on 24 November.
