Though the result must be confirmed by the National Executive Committee, the figures given at the count showed a comfortable win for Michelle Stanistreet with 2936 votes against 1392 polled by the second place candidate, John Toner. Philip Hunt polled 280 votes and Chris Youett 225.
The election attracted a high turnout by recent standards, with 4833 votes cast.
Michelle’s campaign received strong support from all geographical and industrial sectors of the union, including many leading activists in the Oxford branch and chapels.
Her election marks the first time a woman has held the post of either General Secretary or Deputy General Secretary in the entire 101 year history of the NUJ. Considering that women make up around half the NUJ membership and women are currently joining and becoming chapel reps faster than men, some people might say it’s about time!
