The NUJ is balloting for strike action at the BBC over a variety of cost cutting measures. A key trigger was the decision to begin selecting staff for compulsory redundancy, as part of an effort to fill a huge funding shortfall.
The NUJ has always rejected compulsory redundancies and insists that there must be agreement on how the money should be saved. The ballot also concerns key changes being proposed for BBC pensions and the withholding of unpredictability allowance from newly employed journalists.
An M/FoCs meeting scheduled for January 9th has been postponed to allow more time for talks. In the meantime, the NUJ is calling for a strong YES vote to make the BBC rethink its plans.
