A hard act to follow...The branch seeks a new delegate to the Trades Council The role of Oxford Trades Council in co-ordinating action between trades unions in the area has been revitalised in the past year by branch delegate Dona Velluti.
Dona, MoC at Butterworth Heinemann in Oxford, was elected President of the trades council and soon set about promoting its role within the movement and in the media, particularly emphasising the need for women to take up elected positions within their own unions.
She was in the forefront of organising support for postal workers, who were victimised and witch-hunted by management and the local media. She took a lead role in the campaign to save Peers School from being closed and replaced with a city academy.
Her work with Trades Council involved making many connections – organising solidarity support for visiting Columbian trade unionists but also openong a dialogue with the Oxfordshire Federation of Small Businesses for discussion on possible common issues.
Dona has now stood down as president and delegate to trades council and the branch would like to thank her for her tireless work in both roles and hope that she can inspire others to follow her example.
The branch is now seeking a new delegate to work alongside its other delegate Bill MacKeith, a great stalwart of the branch. Please contact the branch secretary if you are interested. AW 2007-12-07
